A commissioner asked the Fernandina Beach City Commission to move $25,000 from contingency to the Council on Aging, increasing the council's allocation from $50,000 to $75,000, citing cuts from Nassau County and the organization s role serving older residents.
"I'd like to ask the commission to add $25,000 to Council on Aging, since they've been pretty much cut off from Nassau County," the commissioner said, requesting the transfer from contingency to augment the existing line item.
Commissioners discussed where the funds should come from; Ms. Campbell and staff noted there are effectively two contingency buckets in the materials (an existing contingency line and additional funds generated by the millage increase). Commissioner Teuton supported helping the Council on Aging but questioned whether Peppertree Village residents served by the organization live in city limits. Commissioner Minsky said she preferred waiting until after Nov. 3 to make discretionary allocations, arguing that the outcome of an upcoming amendment could affect the city's ability to fund nonprofits next year.
A motion was made and seconded to move the money into the budget this year so the Council on Aging would have earlier access. Commissioners ultimately approved the final budget "as amended" by that motion; the budget adoption record shows the final vote was 5-0.
