The Farmington City Council voted unanimously to approve summary action items that included authorization to dispose of unclaimed evidence after staff completed a long-delayed inventory of the evidence room.
City Attorney Paul explained how the city handles found and seized property and how proceeds are handled: "If something's, you know, like a shirt or something, we're not gonna try and sell that. We just throw those away. But this stuff has potentially some value. And so what we'll do is we'll take these items and we will sell them at auction, and then it just goes into the city's general fund." Council and youth city council members discussed alternatives, including donating usable items to nonprofits such as the juvenile justice center; Paul noted donations would have to be to a "bonafide nonprofit" and that electronics would be wiped before sale.
Mayor (chair) invited youth members to weigh in on whether proceeds should go back into city programs; students and council members suggested options including auctions, direct donation of lower-value items to residents or nonprofits, and special fund allocation. The council recorded the formal motion to approve the summary action list (items 1–3) and the motion carried unanimously.
