The Jamestown Harbor Commission voted to hire a contractor to perform a full above-and-below-water inspection of the Woodpile Pier.
Executive Director Jim Hegney told the commission he had obtained competitive quotes for underwater-only and combined above-and-below-water inspections. He said the combined assessment was quoted at $33,400 while a below-water-only inspection was $21,000. "So above and below was $33,400. Below only is $21,000," Hegney said during the discussion. Commissioners debated whether to limit work to the most-damaged outer sections or to commission a complete assessment for all 32–34 stations. Several commissioners argued that a full engineering baseline would better inform future repairs.
The commission agreed to proceed with Teague and Bond for the full above-and-below-water inspection and voted to approve the work. The vote was taken at the meeting; commissioners also asked that facilities coordinate the scope and present findings once the inspection is complete. The firm will evaluate decking, cross bracing and underwater supports; the commission expects a full report to guide capital planning and potential decking replacement.
Next steps: Facilities staff will coordinate with the selected contractor and report back to the commission with an expected timeline and any recommended follow-up work.
