Middletown recognized as a Bird Town; local organizers outline steps to protect habitat

The Middletown Township Board of Supervisors on Sept. 14 welcomed a presentation recognizing the township’s new Bird Town designation and heard how the program offers resources, trainings and grant opportunities for local conservation work. Ray Post, who introduced the initiative as the local Bird Town chair, thanked township staff and said the effort aims "to protect birds and their habitats, making Middletown an even friendlier place for birds and, as a direct result, a healthier, and more beautiful place for all".

Heidi Shiver, president of the Bird Town program in Pennsylvania, described the statewide network and certification tiers and said municipalities can access workshops, a welcome packet and mini grants. “We just received this year a DCNR C2 PEACHA grant… these funds will be provided for $31,000 mini grants,” Shiver said, urging the township to use the Bird Town framework to promote native plantings, reduce pesticide use, and pursue grant funding. Shiver noted a relaxed reporting timeline for the new designation and that the township can apply for bronze, silver or gold tiers depending on actions taken.

Township officials said they will create a webpage with program information and that staff will coordinate with the township’s Environmental Advisory Council and parks department on next steps. The presentation highlighted specific, actionable items residents and the township can pursue, from planting native trees and shrubs to public education and applying for available mini grants.
