Staff summarized themes from a recent community listening session: many members of the public favored starting the school year prior to Labor Day to create a consistent start date, ending the year earlier, and shortening spring break so instructional time aligns better with assessment windows. Jillian Leiter said the listening-session themes included a desire for "consistency in the calendar development from year to year" and protection of teacher planning time.
Trustees debated the tradeoffs: some favored the Monday before Labor Day start and preserving a short spring break; others noted family needs for a full week and urged the district to solicit broader feedback. Staff proposed sharing last year's survey results and public comments (143 pages were noted) and said if a policy is adopted the draft calendar could be presented in October with 30 days of public comment and a board vote before the end of November so families receive the 2027–28 calendar earlier than in prior years.
