The Chelsea police chief (S15) reviewed August activity, citing investigations into counterfeit checks, multiple fraud reports and targeted traffic enforcement near construction zones.
The chief described two counterfeit-check cases and a range of fraud scams where residents were persuaded to send money after receiving false demands and noted an instance where losses increased from $680 to $5,400 before being stopped. "One of the things that can stop this is when you write these checks, having that added protection when you go to your bank," he said, offering practical advice on how residents can protect themselves. The department also reported roughly 20 traffic crashes for the month and focused enforcement on Freer Road construction where drivers bypassed restrictions.
The chief thanked volunteers and mutual-aid partners, including Michigan State Police and Washtenaw County Sheriff's Department, for parade and fair support and urged continued vigilance against scams. Council members asked no substantive follow-up questions during the report.
