Chief Bernie Grazolia of the Hammond Fire Department and Assistant Chief Chris Godi of the Hammond Police Department spoke about duty, sacrifice and continuing consequences for some responders at the city's 25th‑anniversary remembrance.
Grazolia reflected on the brotherhood among first responders and the immediacy of that day for those who served. Closing his remarks, he quoted the firefighter's creed: "When I am called to duty, god, wherever flames may rage, give me strength to save a life, whatever it be its age." He used the creed to emphasize the moral obligation of firefighters to run toward danger.
Assistant Chief Chris Godi thanked organizers and honor guards, reiterated casualty figures from Sept. 11 and drew attention to longer‑term health effects among responders. "As the 25th anniversary passes, over 469 New York City police officers alone since then have died of a 9 11 connected cancer or other related illness," he said, citing ongoing illnesses and deaths linked to response work at Ground Zero. Both officials urged remembrance of those who did not return and recognition of continued costs borne by responders and their families.
Remarks were ceremonial and memorial in tone; no formal policy actions or resolutions were proposed during the program.
