Molineux said the district's P25 digital radio system is now fully operational and that DeKalb 9‑1‑1 has secured property and partner support to expand tower coverage.
"Their P25 radio system is is complete. We've have completely rolled that out," Molineux said. He described purchasing about half an acre of property on Tater Knob Road near an existing Verizon tower in Liberty; the Tennessee Advanced Communications Network (TACAN) and other partners will provide towers and equipment at minimal cost to the district. Molineux estimated the work amounts to roughly $3 million in radio assets being deployed with limited direct expense to DeKalb 9‑1‑1.
He said the new sites will improve portable radio coverage in known dead areas such as downtown Liberty and Wolf Creek and help backfill coverage along state highways. The rollout also included moving agencies to encrypted trunking radios, which Molineux said improves operational security though it has drawn some public pushback.
