The Western Riverside Council of Governments executive committee voted to adopt a rank order for potential 2027 General Assembly speakers, placing Kat Cole first, a duo of former astronauts second, and Mike Pompeo third. Bonnie Woodrum, WRCOG staff, presented the ad hoc committee's shortlist and summarized member feedback and budget context, noting the program’s speaker budget typically “hovers around $100,000.”
Christian Dinko, chair of the General Assembly ad hoc committee, praised the final three and explained the committee reviewed video and negotiated with the Washington Speakers Bureau to pare nominations. “If you haven't had an opportunity, she seemed to be a very good speaker,” Dinko said of Kat Cole, and he described the astronaut duo as offering storytelling and humility that could appeal broadly.
Members debated tradeoffs: some favored Cole’s leadership and energy to “put the fire in our belly,” while others highlighted the entertainment and dual‑speaker value of the astronauts, which may exceed the target budget but could be negotiated down. Chair (Speaker 2) moved the ranking onto the floor and the committee approved the motion by roll call.
The ranking gives staff clear direction to approach speakers in priority order and to pursue the next candidate if negotiations fail. The committee instructed staff to report back on negotiation progress and any required budget adjustments.
