The Lavaca County Commissioners Court on Sept. 11 voted to accept a written resignation submitted by Chief Michael Burr, with the chief agreeing to remain on duty through Oct. 31, 2026 to assist with transition tasks. The motion to accept the resignation was moved by Precinct 3 and seconded by Precinct 4, and the court approved it by voice vote.
The presiding County Judge praised Burr’s tenure across two counties, citing his work on interoperability, communications, and statewide advocacy. “He’s put Lavaca and Colorado County on the map,” the judge said, noting Burr’s role on state committees and leadership of rural ambulance initiatives. The judge told the court the resignation aligns with the planned end date for the shared director arrangement and that a press release recognizing Burr’s accomplishments would be considered.
The court did not read the resignation letter into the minutes but confirmed it was received in the neighboring county; commissioners said policies typically limit public release of resignation letters. Burr’s continued service through Oct. 31 is intended to allow the outgoing director and the named interim director to complete required audits and transfer responsibilities.
