Glynn County and partner jurisdictions gathered in Brunswick for a 25th‑anniversary remembrance of the Sept. 11 attacks, observing moments of silence tied to the departures of American Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175 and honoring the nearly 3,000 people killed on that day. The ceremony included a presentation of colors, an invocation, the national anthem and brief remarks from local officials.
Mayor Cosby Johnson of Brunswick offered condolences to victims' families and thanked first responders and military members for their service, saying the attacks were aimed at tearing at "the fabric of what we are as a nation" and urging residents to respond with grace and unity. Guest speaker Larry Thompson, a former U.S. Department of Justice official, reflected on the national mood the day after the attacks and praised the continuing work of first responders and philanthropic efforts tied to 9/11.
Speakers repeatedly called for remembering both the lives lost and the actions taken afterward to support victims and those who serve. The program noted a local memorial wall that lists area residents and federal agents tied to the events and later responder illnesses, and it included youth participation in a flag placement by junior ROTC before the ceremony closed.
