The superintendent presented four draft calendars for the 2027–28 school year and summarized staff feedback from a division survey.
The presentation showed 335 staff members completed a survey: roughly 50% favored calendar draft 1, which is similar to the current structure and preserves workdays and professional development time while aligning the school year with graduation and Memorial Day constraints. The superintendent said the draft creates 180 instructional days (above the statutory minimum of 990 hours) to give students more contact time and build consistency across schools.
Board members asked whether the district could revert to an hours‑based calendar if the division needed flexibility midyear (for example after extensive snow days); staff said the division reports actual hours per school to the Virginia Department of Education and can adjust if extraordinary circumstances require it. The board took the calendar presentation as information and will consider approval at the October meeting.
