Amanda Eberhardt, secretary and treasurer of Clinton Trees Forever, told attendees the memorial at Milk Creek Parkway and Main Avenue began after 2001 as a partnership with the city, energy and industry partners and Trees Forever headquarters in Marion. She said the original planting included 23 freedom trees, three lighted flags and a permanent memorial plaque and that the first trees were planted on 08/24/2002.
‘‘Today, we plant more than a tree. We plant a living memorial,’’ Eberhardt said as volunteers placed a bridal red maple at the site. She described the planting as a ‘‘small and meaningful step in the healing process’’ and tied the memorial’s purpose to community remembrance and resilience. The group said ceremonies have been held every five years and that additional trees have been added since the original dedication.
