The Lander County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved the county’s updated Community Wildfire Protection Plan for 2026 after a detailed presentation by Louis Fendive of Resource Concepts.
Fendive told commissioners the CWPP assesses suppression capability, surrounding fuels and structure vulnerability across 17 communities and offers site‑specific and countywide recommendations. "The Community Wildfire Protection Plan or CWPP is a non regulatory plan, that was developed collaboratively to assess wildfire risk throughout the county and also develop recommendations to reduce that risk where possible," he said. Countywide recommendations include creating a county wildland fire coordinator position to help secure grant funding and ensure fuels‑reduction projects are implemented and maintained.
Commissioners praised the collaborative approach, noted previous projects and NV Energy corridor work, and said passing the CWPP will strengthen future grant applications for mitigation and revegetation projects. The board approved the plan by voice vote, with staff and stakeholders directed to pursue the plan’s implementation steps and grant opportunities.
