The Jefferson County Commission on Sept. 10 adopted the county budget and a package of resolutions presented at a pre-commission meeting, moving the county into a year that leaders described as heavy on capital projects.
Commissioner Knight thanked finance staff and department heads, saying, "We did have a good year. And for that, I wanna thank all of our employees for what you do every day" (Commissioner Knight). The chair noted the commission received 57 resolutions in advance and said changes made at the pre-meeting left the package in good shape.
The chair highlighted the budget's emphasis on infrastructure work — roads, bridges and land planning — and noted the sheriff's department accounts for about one-third of the county's budget, framing public safety as a sustained priority for the commission. The commission approved the budget by voice vote after moving the agenda forward.
The commission did not make new changes to allocations on the floor; commissioners commended staff for months-long work on revenue and audit preparations, and the county manager said the office was finishing pay and bills and continuing the state audit. Next steps include departmental implementation of capital projects and continued oversight by county finance and management officers.
