Commissioners used the Sept. 10 meeting to promote several upcoming community events and outreach efforts.
Commissioner Tice announced a memorial ride honoring Virgil Ware and Johnny Robinson, saying it will be "Sunday, September 13 at 02:00" and that riders will meet at the A.G. Gaston Hotel; proceeds will fund a statue in the Civil Rights District. Tice asked that the county support participating employees and encouraged residents to visit a nearby coffee shop and support the fundraising effort.
Other announcements included a free public event at Miles College on Sept. 25 and a "Get fit while you sit" senior marathon at the Crossplex with an expected 1,500 senior participants, free health trainings and chair-based exercise sessions. Commissioners also noted ballroom dance classes and other free senior activities, and invited staff and commissioners to join community cultural events. The commission asked staff to follow up on opioid funding conversations and welcomed visiting groups attending a Martin Luther King Jr. exhibit.
