The planning commission voted to send an updated ordinance on accessory dwelling units (ADUs) to public hearing and onward to city council.
Staff (speaker 6) summarized attorney comments and edits: the draft should clarify whether an owner who does not rent an ADU needs a rental license, note that the commission’s proposed standards are more permissive than current code minimum lot sizes, and include a short process for converting an existing detached accessory structure into an ADU. The attorney’s suggested language reads in part: an existing detached accessory structure may be converted to a detached accessory dwelling "provided that the structure complies with all applicable requirements..." and that the property owner "submit an application and obtain approval for the conversion through the same process and subject to the same requirements applicable to an application for a new detached ADU."
Commissioners agreed the attorney’s text should be inserted, and the commission moved unanimously to set the draft for public hearing and to provide the attorney with a final review before council consideration. Staff said the hearing would be scheduled to meet state timelines for ordinance adoption.
