Commissioners reviewed several items involving historic properties and board governance. Staff recommended awarding Mid South Restoration a specialized contract to address eight sash windows at Ravenswood Mansion (repair, reseal, caulking and selective frame repair rather than full-frame replacement) and requested a waiver of competitive selection because of the work's specialized nature and long lead times for historic components.
The commission discussed funding sources for such maintenance; staff said the facilities maintenance fund typically receives a minimum annual contribution of $45,000 and estimated contributions are now about $75,000 a year, but some large repairs will still require general-fund support. Commissioners agreed historic-maintenance costs can be large and acknowledged the difference between private-residence repairs and historic-home conservation.
Separately, staff proposed establishing the Brentvale Pavilion as a rentable facility with an hourly rate of $100 (two-hour minimum, 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. available hours) and asked historic-homes staff to coordinate the rentals. New-business discussion also covered a proposal to increase the historic commission membership by one and change the selection of the commissioner's representative from a mayoral appointment to selection by the board of commissioners; commissioners debated timing of the new appointment and whether to align it with the usual February appointment cycle.
What happens next: staff will seek authorization on the procurement waiver for the specialized window work, and commissioners asked staff to prepare appointment and advertising timelines for the historic commission seat.
