Committee members received an update that the city hired a coordinator for the Marsh Oaks community garden. "His name is Garrett... Lopez," a member said, and the coordinator has begun planning plantings and site use. Staff reported that the coordinator has identified six trees for a pilot planting and has discussed varietals and placement with the committee.
Members recommended a modest pilot to test species and maintenance approaches, including potential permaculture bed plantings to attract pollinators. Staff said the garden's building and parking‑lot work must be completed before the community garden installation but that they are aiming for October planting and a possible ribbon‑cutting aligned with Veterans Day on Nov. 11 if site work is finished.
Committee members also discussed whether the centennial tree planting could be coordinated with the community garden ribbon‑cutting to create a photo opportunity and avoid scheduling conflicts. Staff said they are coordinating logistics and budgeting with the city and Arts & Recreation to minimize overlap and ensure each event retains its intended focus.
