A member of the county's historical commission told the Calhoun County commissioners the commission unanimously voted to place a National Register of Historic Places plaque at the local museum and will display a large lens originally purchased from France in 1872.
The speaker said the lens, noted in the remarks as costing $12,000 in 1872, will be part of the museum's new display and urged residents to visit a concurrent Indianola exhibit at the library, which the speaker said would run for about 15 more days. The speaker also described a weekly 'Tombstone Tuesday' project begun in February 2025 that shares gravesite biographies online, crediting Jennifer Wyatt, Sheryl Cuellar and Jody Weaver for the series. "This is national register to us is a big deal," the commission member said, characterizing the recognition as significant for the county.
The update was presented during the meeting's public participation segment and required no formal vote. The commission member said the historical-commission projects have generated thousands of views online and that the museum display aims to highlight local history for residents and visitors.
