Commissioners directed staff to assemble data on a local-option gas tax and alternative revenue options for roads and infrastructure, including implications from the growing number of electric vehicles. A commissioner moved to have staff return information next week; the motion passed on a 4'1 voice vote.
County legal counsel briefed the board on timing and legal paths: "The deadline for 2026 for that passed in August. So we you have no referendum this year, and we're 2 years away from another referendum date. A super majority of the board, majority plus 1, vote could impose the gas tax. In order for that to be effective 01/01/2027, the board would have to do that on or before October 1 of this year," counsel explained. Commissioners acknowledged the time pressure and asked staff to model revenue projections and equity impacts. The motion directs staff to return with numbers and options at the next meeting so the board can decide whether to pursue a local-option gas tax or other mechanisms.
