Christine Hessler, the district's director of curriculum and instruction, walked the board through the RSU 14 curriculum guides and how families can access them online.
"The primary purpose of our curriculum guides is to share and communicate our educational standards, directly to families and community," Hessler said during the presentation. She explained the guides map Maine's Learning Results into grade-level and course-level resources and include links to the Maine DOE. Hessler described the guides as a "work in progress" and encouraged teachers to use them in open houses and conferences. Several board members asked about district autonomy versus the state standards; Hessler said the state sets the standards while district staff decide curricular pathways. The chair noted a few guides were missing from the public listing and moved the formal vote to the next meeting so members can review the full set.
Board members expressed support for the public-facing transparency of the guides but raised practical questions about pre-K content links and how the board's oversight role should be framed when a guide is updated during the school year. Hessler and staff agreed to add the pre-K materials and to provide clarification to the board before the vote at the next regular meeting.
