Rosemary Plyben, host of FYI Weekly, said Greensboro is mounting a coordinated citywide response to recent serious violence that pairs Greensboro Police Department enforcement activities with prevention and intervention resources.
"Homicides have decreased from 29 last year to 19 this year," Plyben said. She reported officials also told the city that aggravated shootings rose from 62 incidents involving 70 victims to 78 incidents involving 98 victims, and that 35 shootings involving 45 victims occurred in the most recent 90 days. The city said the GPD will coordinate patrol, investigation, gun-intelligence, and violent-offender resources while community safety staff focus on retaliation prevention, trauma response, and longer-term supports.
City officials said police deployment will be guided by current data, intelligence and investigative information, and that GPD is pursuing coordination with prosecutors and state and federal partners where appropriate. The city announced a remembrance for homicide victims on Sept. 25 at the Memorial Garden (Green and Washington streets), co-hosted by Mothers Standing Against Gun Violence.
The briefing did not include specific changes to budgets, staffing levels, or new ordinances; officials said they will continue to evaluate operational needs as conditions evolve.
