Sheriff reports inmate assaulted a sergeant in jail medical block

The sheriff informed the committee that in the prior week an inmate who had been convicted of homicide and was housed in the medical block assaulted a female sergeant while staff were informing him of new restrictions tied to rule violations. Two additional jailers assisted in securing the inmate and three staff went to a hospital for checks; the sheriff said the sergeant suffered substantial facial injuries.

"He attacked the female sergeant jailer and assaulted her especially in the face area," the sheriff said. The sheriff added that the door to the hallway had been propped and two deputies were positioned at the door; response was immediate but the attack happened quickly, he said.
