During its Sept. 3 meeting the Town of Chapel Hill Board of Adjustment reviewed four candidate applications for alternate seats and debated applicants’ experience, board preferences and extraterritorial-jurisdiction (ETJ) representation. Several members emphasized interest in bringing environmental expertise and student perspectives to the board, while others prioritized applicants with prior board experience.
Members explained that some applicants listed the Board of Adjustment as a first choice, while others applied with the planning commission as their primary preference. James Baker, the board attorney, advised that alternates may fill in for regular seats and that alternates do not have to mirror ETJ designation exactly. The board asked staff to contact two preferred candidates (referred to in discussion as David and Peter) to confirm continued interest and, if they remain available, to return the matter for action at the Oct. 1 meeting. A motion to table the appointment recommendation to the next scheduled meeting on Oct. 1 passed unanimously after a roll call vote.
Board members noted that tabling will also allow staff to prepare the variance order from tonight’s case for inclusion in the Oct. 1 packet, which the chair said would be efficient for staff and the board.
