The Government Audit and Oversight Committee on Sept. 3 voted 3–0 to forward an ordinance that would amend the airport’s third‑party security camera surveillance policy to include off‑airport remote airline check‑in and baggage handling systems.
Diana Bullock, representing the airport, told the committee the pilot has processed nearly 200,000 bags and is intended to reduce lobby and roadway congestion. "The cameras are part of a pilot program to expand remote check‑in and baggage drop off at the Hilton San Francisco Union Square," Bullock said, adding that the cameras will record video but there will be no live monitoring and that "access will be limited to trained and authorized SFO staff and law enforcement partners." Bullock said footage would generally be retained for one year unless needed for investigation or litigation and that identifying information would be removed before public release.
There was no public comment on the ordinance. Chair Supervisor Steven Sherrill moved to forward the item with a positive recommendation; the clerk recorded three ayes and the motion passed. The committee did not adopt changes on the floor and the item will return to the full Board for final action.
