The Lake County Board of Commissioners spent a substantial portion of the meeting addressing public concerns and municipal questions about a proposed renewal of the State Route 2 maintenance contract. A commissioner framed the plan as a cost-saving cooperative approach—arguing that the county can buy and maintain equipment and bill cities for their share, which preserves municipal savings for future capital replacements such as traffic lights and reduces duplication across six jurisdictions.
Commissioners rejected claims on social media that the arrangement amounted to "double taxation," explaining that administrative costs and equipment depreciation billed to cities reflect actual service provision rather than an attempt to shift costs to the county general fund. They also cited an Ohio Auditor of State performance audit that recommended updating the decades-old contract to correct mileage allocations and improve accountability. Commissioners invited city council members to a Sept. 10 workshop and said staff will go out to bid for the Route 2 lighting project to have construction-ready plans next spring. "We are the only county in the state of Ohio that provides this service to our municipalities with respect to a state route," one commissioner said, stressing Lake County's role as a model for intergovernmental cooperation.
