Commissioners approved the Parks and Recreation Department's 2027 capital request Sept. 2, signaling a preference for targeted repairs to the Bierman Family Aquatic Center rather than full immediate replacement of the pool surface.
Dan told the commission he had solicited a plaster subcontractor estimate of about $198,000 to redo the entire pool but recommended keeping the department's request at $152,000. He said keeping the $152,000 ask would allow the city to plaster where most needed and use remaining funds on priority items (refiberglassing steps, refurbishing slides and recaulk work) that extend the facility's life. "We either need to maintain it and be proud of it, or we need to close it down," he said, arguing for preservation.
Commissioners expressed broad support for preserving the aquatic center as a community asset that draws users from beyond Merrill and favored the targeted approach rather than increasing the request. A motion to approve the capital package as presented was made, seconded and passed by voice vote.
The department noted some items (shade sails, slides) may require competitive bids and additional cost refinements; staff will proceed with priorities and report back if adjustments are needed.
