JL Alexander, who identified himself as owner and CEO of the National Running Crew and a representative of the Black Girls Run movement, said the organization will bring a significant national contingent to Run Richmond 1619.
"17 years ago, Black Girls Run was created," Alexander said, and he provided participation figures: the movement now includes "77 groups across the country, 250,000 members represented in 32 states," and "more than 500 Black Girls Run women will be running Run Richmond 16 19," he said. Alexander added that "over 80% are coming from outside of the state of Virginia," a statistic he presented to highlight Richmond's national draw for this event.
Alexander framed the participation as an opportunity to showcase Richmond's story and culture to visitors and to create connections between local residents and national participants. He thanked the city and organizers for including Black Girls Run in the event program.
