The San Antonio City Council recognized Big Brothers Big Sisters of South Texas for its 50th anniversary during the Sept. 3 meeting.
Denise Barhurst, president and CEO, thanked the mayor and council and highlighted the program's outcomes: "Today 85 percent of our youth are enrolling in post secondary education after graduating high school," and she said 96 percent of alumni attain living-wage employment by age 26. Barhurst said the organization is still operating with a waiting list of nearly 300 children and asked for continued volunteer engagement and support.
Mayor and council members offered congratulations and noted the organization’s role in mentoring and partnering with schools, businesses and nonprofits. The mayor also observed it is budget season and told the group the city is "looking to find additional money for you," though no specific budget commitment was made at the meeting.
