The Lake County Board of Supervisors on Aug. 25 adopted a proclamation designating Aug. 31, 2026, as International Overdose Awareness Day and recognized the work of the SafeRx Coalition to expand overdose-prevention resources.
Supervisor Sabatier read the proclamation noting that in 2024 Lake County had 21 fatal overdoses and an overdose death rate of 27.78 per 100,000 residents compared with the California rate of 14.48 per 100,000. Kim Tangerman, deputy health services director speaking for Mary Gross and the SafeRx Coalition, described local harm-reduction efforts and said the coalition has established "8 Narcan newsstands and 4 vending machines providing free naloxone to community members." Tangerman summarized progress in moving Lake County from the 2nd-highest overdose rate in 2019 to 12th in 2022 and framed continued work as a community effort to prevent further deaths: "The SafeRx coalition is about keeping people alive."
Board members thanked health partners and praised outreach and prevention work; the board signed the proclamation and posed for a photo before briefly moving to closed session for unrelated personnel and legal items.
Provenance: Proclamation language and local overdose statistics are in the proclamation (SEG 505 SEG 547); SafeRx remarks are in the deputy director's comments (SEG 548 SEG 642).
