Comal County's Commissioner's Court on Sept. 3 read and adopted a proclamation recognizing September 2026 as Suicide Prevention Month.
The proclamation, read into the record by the county judge, cited local mobile crisis outreach activity: the Hill Country MHDD Mobile Crisis Outreach Team (MCOT) has assessed approximately 942 individuals experiencing suicidal thoughts or behaviors over the past 12 months, with about 404 reporting a lifetime history of a suicide attempt. Commissioner Hogg moved to approve the proclamation and Commissioner Leacock seconded; the court voted in favor.
Ariel, introduced as lead for MCOT, accepted the proclamation and urged community efforts to connect with people before crises escalate. "Suicide prevention doesn't begin when someone is in active crisis. It begins long before that," Ariel said, adding that prevention can mean consistent check-ins and ensuring people know they belong.
County officials framed the proclamation as an invitation for partnerships among mental health providers, first responders, schools, health care professionals and residents to reduce stigma and expand access to crisis response and ongoing support.
