A commissioner (name not specified) recapped a recent fair board meeting, saying attendees raised concern about revenue and volunteer capacity after multiple carnival cancellations and described ongoing branding and outreach work.
"They talked about the fair fund balance and how why the reserves are important," the commissioner said. Meeting participants discussed workforce shortages that almost led to carnival cancellations and emphasized why reserves are necessary to sustain the event.
Commissioners also discussed the fair board's branding process. The commissioner said two fair board representatives participated in lengthy branding work sessions and that the board had opportunity to comment; some participants nonetheless reported surprise when branding options were presented. To reduce confusion, commissioners plan a work session to revisit communications between the fair board and its liaisons and to consider a formal contract defining the auction committee's responsibilities.
The board praised an emergency‑management exercise conducted as part of fair planning and noted ongoing equipment and volunteer needs the fair board must address. No county budget actions were taken at the Sept. 3 staff meeting; commissioners said they expect continued coordination between county staff and the fair board.
