The Chanute Unified School District 413 Board of Education on Sept. 2 adopted the district’s 2026–2027 budget and approved two related tax-rate resolutions. President Cassie Cleaver opened the Revenue Neutral Rate hearing before the board voted to exceed the revenue neutral rate by adopting Resolution No. 26/27-04 (motion by Bri Leroy; second by Jennifer Zywietz). Clerk Slane conducted the roll-call vote, which was 7–0 in favor.
The board also adopted Resolution No. 26/27-05 authorizing a local option percentage of 33% for the 2026–2027 school year (motion by Heather Guernsey; second by Bri Leroy), which passed on a 7–0 roll call. After reviewing the district needs assessment and state assessment data discussed at the June 15 board meeting, the board adopted the 2026–2027 budget as published in The Chanute Tribune on Aug. 14, 2026 (motion by Jennifer Zywietz; second by Dr. Bruce Lee); the vote was 7–0.
Why it matters: adopting the budget and exceeding the revenue neutral rate sets the district’s revenue and tax posture for the coming school year and establishes the local option percentage used in computing property tax levies. The actions took place during the budget hearing portion of the meeting; there were no patron questions recorded during the public hearing.
What happened next: the board recessed for a dinner with new teachers and returned to complete the meeting’s agenda, which included personnel actions and transportation purchases.
