Garland staff walked the All Abilities Committee through how the adopted budget and the voter-approval alternative would affect library purchases and city events. The presenter said the adopted budget includes funding for roughly $1,000,050 in library materials, which had been broken out by the department to add about 25,610 new titles across adult, teen and children collections; under the voter-approval scenario the library allocation would be about $495,000 (roughly 10,900 titles).
Members reacted to the scale of cuts to special events. "That's huge. We go from 20 events to 2 events," one member said, noting the potential loss of festivals and community programs. Staff listed events that could be affected under a vote against, including the Asian American Festival, Juneteenth, Red, White & You and Christmas on the Square, and said those event budgets are part of the choice facing voters.
