The Public Works Board on Sept. 4 approved a decision-package submittal to the Office of Financial Management and the Governor's Office requesting $500,900,000 in appropriation authority for the Public Works Assistance account for the 2027–29 biennium.
Maria Jawad, managing director for the Community Infrastructure Assistance Unit, described the ask as a bold opportunity to accelerate the revolving loan program and provide construction, preconstruction and emergency funds over the next biennium. "I think it's an opportunity to really showcase the value of accelerating the revolving loan program and providing certainty to local jurisdictions that there is a space to turn to for their infrastructure investment needs," she said. Member Gary Roe noted the account suffered transfers in the last session but retains authority to ask for future funds. Member Rowe moved to approve the Commerce submittal; the board approved the motion by voice vote.
Why it matters: If adopted in the budget, the appropriation authority would substantially expand the PWB's capacity to finance projects across the state and influence legislative negotiations in the 2027 session.
