A resident who said he operates an active farm and a private airstrip told the Harris City Planning Commission the proposed development along 3700 South Perry Street risks creating conflict between long‑time agricultural activity and new households. The resident urged commissioners to reorient lots so houses sit farther from his fence line and to check aviation setbacks.
“I'm an active farm, and there's a lot of dust,” the resident said during public comment, adding that planes using the private strip generate noise that could provoke complaints from new neighbors. He cited the airstrip identifier "16 UT" and asked commissioners to acknowledge its presence on FAA charts and to consider the runway's setback when approving lot configurations. Commissioners agreed to direct staff to obtain GPS coordinates and verify any applicable airstrip overlay or approach‑setback restrictions before forwarding the application to council.
The comment highlighted a recurring planning challenge: balancing development with legacy agricultural uses. Commissioners asked staff and the applicant to show the distance from the runway centerline to proposed building envelopes so the commission can determine whether specific lots would be build‑restricted or would require additional mitigation in the development agreement.
