Lee Corbert, Suffield’s Director of Public Works, told the Board of Selectmen the Suffield Street culvert had been closed following an inspection that revealed a large crack and movement of the sidewall. The Town is pursuing a temporary bridge to reopen the roadway while the permanent replacement proceeds; the temporary installation was estimated at $225,000–$250,000 with a target installation date of Sept. 21, subject to utility coordination. Corbert said the permanent replacement is prioritized for engineering and permitting with construction anticipated next spring.
Corbert also updated the board on other projects: the High School/Bruce Park bridge is awaiting materials with construction expected to begin in December and complete by the end of January; Copper Hill Road culvert and Hickory Street Bridge are in design and permitting with bidding anticipated in November; Phelps Road milling and reconstruction is expected to begin by the end of September. He noted recurring accidents near the Suffield Street railroad underpass and described temporary barriers and proposed LED-flashing stop signs as planned safety improvements.
