The Delaware City Civil Service Commission on Sept. 2 approved updates to the September 2026 firefighter certified list, accepting nine total changes including seven new hires and two removals.
Chief Pyle told commissioners that "7 of them, thankfully, are new hires. They are starting their 3rd week," and described the two removals: one removed after being passed over five times and later employed elsewhere, and one removed for failing to pass all parts of the test. He said the changes were largely a "cleanup" to keep the list accurate.
Commissioners asked how the new hires would be assigned. Chief Pyle said six of the seven hires are expected to staff a new fire station scheduled to come online next year and that the department expects three promotions later in the year with replacement hires to fill lieutenant vacancies.
A commissioner moved to approve the certified list and a second was recorded; the commission approved the motion by roll call.
