Maui Police told the DRIP committee that their limited pilot of license‑plate reader cameras produced measurable investigative benefits.
Lieutenant Cristina Banacorsi said the pilot — which used 11 'legendary' cameras prior to the Motorola contract — was associated with about 40 cases solved within a one‑year span, including attempted murder, hit‑and‑run and robbery cases. "That was only 11 cameras," she said, arguing that a larger, better‑connected set of devices increases the likelihood of locating suspects or stolen vehicles and reduces manpower demands for follow‑up searches.
Committee members said they would like more formal performance metrics (e.g., hours saved, cases cleared) and requested that MPD return with a report that quantifies how camera coverage translates to investigatory outcomes. MPD agreed to pull historic records and provide an executive summary for committee review.
