The Landmarks Commission approved a Certificate of Appropriateness Sept. 2 for work at 1222 East Broadway, a house in the East Broadway Historic District. Staff described the main elements as replacing a detached historic garage door with an aluminum door featuring Stockton-style stacked windows to match historic photos, repairing interior leaded glass, and repairing storm and double-hung windows.
Homeowner Tony Lanza said the detached garage door had been removed and replaced on an emergency basis after a contractor found the old doors unsafe (a snapped cable). He chose Stockton-style windows in the new carriage-house door to resemble the historic appearance captured in period photos. Charlie noted the replacement of the nonhistoric attached garage (not visible from the street) was acceptable because it is a later addition.
A commission member moved to approve the COA 'as stated in the request' and the commission voted to approve the permit. Staff noted some storm panes needed replacement and that leaded glass would be repaired rather than removed.
