Speed study on River Valley Road shows 85th-percentile speeds near 33 mph; item held for Alderman Matthews

Engineering presented recent speed-measurement data on River Valley Road at two sample points (near Wingate Way and Foxborough Court). At Wingate Way, northbound average speed was reported as 31 mph, 50th percentile 29 mph and 85th percentile 33 mph; southbound average was 31.3 mph with 85th at 34 mph. At the Foxborough Court location, 85th-percentile speeds ranged about 32 mph. Darren explained that the roadway has many all-way stops that make it difficult to find long uninterrupted segments for speed capture.

After reviewing the data, the Chair asked that Alderman Matthews complete the intake form to clarify what remedy is requested (e.g., removing stop signs, changing speed limits, or other treatment). The committee held the item to allow the sponsor to return with the completed form and clarity about desired outcomes. "So at Wingate Way for the northbound direction, average speed was 31, 50th percentile was 29, 85th was 33," Darren said when presenting the data.

No policy change was approved at the meeting; the committee deferred next steps pending the sponsor's clarification and form submission.
