During general public comment at the Sept. 1 Board of Supervisors meeting several residents and advocates urged the board to demand transparency and independent review of alleged mistreatment and transfers to immigration authorities at the Santa Barbara County Jail.
Anna Garcia and other speakers described video evidence they said showed a community member assaulted in a county facility and urged an immediate investigation. "We demand an investigation immediately to be started at both jails," Anna Garcia told the board during public comment. Another commenter identifying herself as a family member of a person held in the jail reported that the person was beaten, did not receive timely medical attention and was later transferred to Adelanto and then detained by immigration personnel.
Speakers asked the board to demand clear explanation from the sheriff's department about whether ICE operations were being authorized at county facilities and to appoint an inspector general or independent monitor to oversee jail conditions. Several commenters also referenced recent deaths and near‑misses and questioned policies governing releases and communications with families.
Board response: The board heard the comments during general public comment and staff noted there were multiple ways to follow up. The county clerk recorded the concerns and the board did not take immediate action at the meeting; community members were told to pursue the county clerk or Sheriff’s Office for follow‑up and were encouraged to share specific evidence with county staff for investigation.
Why it matters: Allegations of mistreatment and ICE coordination at county detention facilities raise legal and oversight questions about jail operations, information sharing with federal agencies and medical and welfare checks for people in custody. Community advocates at the meeting asked the board to demand timely, independent review and stronger public transparency.
