A property owner asked the select board to maintain a discontinued portion of Old County Road, saying the road had become overgrown after logging and that a contractor estimated about $10,000 to grind the section.
Staff and board members discussed precedents for maintaining discontinued roads and the town's limited maintenance budget. A board member said the town retains the right of way but typically does not maintain discontinued portions for private benefit. "We don't generally maintain discontinued roads like that," staff said. Board members agreed the cost and precedent weighed against taking on the work, and the motion to take no action passed 5-0.
Members noted interest in pursuing grant programs that have previously funded clearing for fire prevention if such funds become available. The board asked staff to monitor such grant opportunities going forward.
