Senator Becker used a request to speak on the condition of the file to state disappointment that SB 492, a multi‑party package intended to aid wildfire survivors, would not advance on that day. He said the bill had been crafted over months with input from survivors and stakeholders and described it as a "balanced and meaningful first step" toward expedited compensation and stronger prevention measures.
"SB 492 would have helped victims receive compensation faster, strengthen wildfire prevention and preparedness, protect survivors from profiteering, and hold utility executives personally accountable when their utilities equipment causes catastrophic fires," Senator Becker said, and he urged that work continue despite the bill not moving forward during the session. Senator Padilla associated himself with the remarks and echoed disappointment that the package did not garner the necessary support that day.
