Participants raised the expense of hauling demo material and suggested ways to reduce per-ton costs. One resident told the group, "The tipping cost for the demo is $90 a ton currently," and several speakers noted that accumulated rain, snow and slush increase weight and hauling expense.
Suggestions included installing a simple storm-cover structure to shed water from containers or investing in compaction equipment the operator could use on-site so the town pays for hauling less air and excess water. Speakers cautioned that buying and maintaining compaction equipment would introduce training, OSHA compliance and insurance requirements and that the town currently owns no such equipment.
No purchase decision was made; the working group agreed to consider cost-benefit analysis of coverings versus compaction equipment and to evaluate maintenance and training needs before recommending capital investment.
