The Dorchester County Council formally proclaimed September 2026 as "No Matter What, You Matter" suicide prevention month, saying suicide remains a significant public health concern and urging residents to seek and offer support.
At the meeting, the council cited the most recently available national and state figures and local youth risk data. The proclamation noted 48,824 Americans died by suicide in 2024 and that Maryland recorded 603 resident deaths by suicide in 2024. The council also pointed to the county youth risk behavior surveillance survey, which it said found 12.3% of Dorchester County high school students reported serious consideration of suicide in the previous 12 months.
Tanish, Center for Learning coordinator at For All Seasons, told the council the organization provides local behavioral health and crisis services and emphasized early identification and follow-up care. "We provide therapy, psychiatry, **** crisis services, and education and outreach to our region," Tanish said, adding that in fiscal year 26 the team completed 893 mental health screenings and identified 164 people with elevated suicide risk who received immediate safety planning.
The proclamation encourages community members, schools and faith leaders to use prevention resources, learn warning signs and support people in crisis. Council members thanked For All Seasons for its services and applauded calls for open conversation and timely intervention.
