The Dorchester County Council held a public hearing and then approved Bill 2026-11, which would change council pay for the next elected council: council member annual pay would increase from $16,000 to $21,000 and the president's pay from $17,000 to $22,000.
Public speaker Sharon Smith presented comparative figures from Mako data showing an average county-council pay of about $49,000, noting variation across the state. "The average across all the counties in, Maryland was 49,000 for council members," Sharon Smith said. Council members debated timing given upcoming state-mandated costs such as paid-family leave and other budget pressures; some argued the increase recognized the time demands of the office and the need to make the seat accessible.
Under state law the increase cannot take effect for members sitting during the term in which it is approved; council members who would personally benefit declined to vote on the bill. After discussion the council moved, seconded and approved the compensation change to take effect for the council elected in the next election cycle.
