The Town Board on Aug. 31 approved a site plan submitted by the Suffolk County Water Authority to construct a new wood-frame building at 37B N. Menantic Road to house a granular activated carbon or resin system for PFAS treatment and to replace a hydropneumatic tank. The action was taken as a Type II action under SEQRA in the board’s resolution.
Approval is subject to conditions noted in the resolution, including relocation of the driveway to be within the 15-foot access easement shown on the approved plan and any necessary requirements of NYSDEC and other agencies. The site is in the Shelter Island Heights business and residential zoning districts and the application was reviewed and referred to the Building Department, Conservation Advisory Council, Planning Board and Town Engineer prior to approval.
Why it matters: The approved project addresses local PFAS treatment infrastructure for the public water system and represents a municipal response to water-quality contaminants; conditions and interagency approvals remain part of final implementation.
