Assistant county administrator Bill Webb opened a press conference launching a regional peanut‑butter-and‑jelly collection drive, saying the effort is meant to show that "local government is just not about passing rules. We're about making a difference in people's lives." The drive is framed as a friendly competition among Hampton Roads municipalities and a direct response to local food insecurity.
Donald Robertson, county administrator for Isle of Wight County, thanked participating cities and food‑bank partners and urged residents and municipal staff to ‘‘jump in, pitch in’’ ahead of the official start. "We know that the official kickoff is on September 1, but it's game on even now," Robertson said. Organizers said the competition runs through Sept. 30 and that winners will be celebrated at a closeout press conference at the winning food bank in October.
